Rants to force a vote on Marriage
Apparently House Minority Leader Chris Rants is going to force a vote on the proposed marriage Amendment today. Currently the bill is stuck in the House Judiciary Committee. If the bill doesn't pass out of the committee this week, it will not be eligible for debate this year. If Rants can get 51 votes then the bill will remain alive, but there will be no guarantee that the bill will be brought up for debate by the Democrat leaders of the House.
This is a smart move by Rants by doing this he can get a recorded vote on marriage to use in the fall elections. However, I expect Rants’ vote to get the 51 votes needed, I just don’t think the bill will ever see the light of day as the Democrats will continue to hide behind the Iowa Supreme Court (which they also control).
I’m interested to know if the Senate has the same option available to them. I think it’s important to keep the bill alive, but I’m not expecting much after that.
Rants' efforts to use a procedural maneuver to get the Marriage Amendment to the floor of the House for a vote have failed. The vote was 46-50, and was a straight party-line vote. According the Register, three Democrats and one Republican were either not present or did not vote.
This was a nice try on Rants' part to try to save face with the conservative wing of the party, but it was too little too late. Get ready for gay marriage in Iowa. It's coming, and soon.
