NARAL v. McCain in Iowa
By Emily Geiger
According to Jonathan Martin, NARAL, the ultra-liberal abortion rights group, plans to spend $10.3 million in various states, including Iowa, running anti-McCain ads. Other states to be targeted are the often very blue Pennsylvania, Michigan, Oregon and New Jersey. Iowa and Nevada, though they were red in 2004, are being targeted as key swing states.
Martin’s article points out the belief held by many that McCain is considered by some to be pro-choice. NARAL wants to paint McCain as an “anti-choice” candidate in these ads, discussing "The Myth of the Moderate Maverick."
I don’t know about these other states, but I think that in Iowa, being a target of NARAL will actually help McCain. This could be just what McCain needs to fire up the base and affirm that McCain is “pro-life enough,” at least enough to be a target of this left-wing advocacy group. Once again, the enemy of my enemy is my friend. This development may be just what it takes to rile up the pro-life community, who isn’t going to take too kindly to NARAL trying to make a play in Iowa.
