Des Moines Register endorses John McCain and Hillary Clinton
Once again the Des Moines Register proves to Iowans, especially Iowa Republicans that their newspaper is out of step with the people.
On the Democrat side many expected the Register to endorse John Edward who they endorsed in 2004. As noted in the article on the website, the Register takes full credit in Edwards second place finish that year.
In 2004, the newspaper’s endorsement of John Edwards coincided with his dramatic surge in the state. Edwards, then a North Carolina senator, moved from single digits in an Iowa poll taken in November 2003 to a second-place finish in the state ’ s 2004 January caucuses. – Des Moines Register
The editorial board at the Register chose Hillary Clinton because of her “readiness to lead,” but they fail to give us any reasons that back up their claim. So I guess I’ll interpret that to mean Jerry Crawford and the Democrat establishment called in their chips to force the Editorial Board’s hands. If they really were looking for readiness, wouldn’t the choice be Biden or Dodd?
On the Republican side they actually give us some reasons why they support McCain.
Time after time, McCain has stuck to his beliefs in the face of opposition from other elected leaders and the public. He has criticized crop and ethanol subsidies during two presidential campaigns in Iowa. He bucked his party and president by opposing the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts. A year ago, in the face of growing criticism, he staunchly supported President Bush ’ s decision to increase troop strength in Iraq.
McCain would enter the White House with deep knowledge of national-security and foreign-policy issues. He knows war, something we believe would make him reluctant to start one. He ’ s also a fierce defender of civil liberties. As a survivor of torture, he has stood resolutely against it. He pledges to start rebuilding America ’ s image abroad. The force of John McCain ’ s moral authority could go a long way toward restoring Americans ’ trust in government and inspiring new generations to believe in the goodness and greatness of America. – Des Moines Register
Unfortunately for McCain an endorsement from the Register is more like a kiss of death for a Republican. It will do little to help his campaign here in Iowa, all it will produce is a press release, to which every Republican will say that they saw it coming.
I’m a little surprised that the Register didn’t endorse Alan Keyes. I mean they are the only people in Iowa providing him any exposure. He hasn’t attended any Republican Party events to my knowledge, and hasn’t even attended any Iowa Christian Alliance events.
